Some of you may be familiar with the book, The Fifth Discipline by Peter Senge of MIT. Written in 1990 in provides many compelling insights into how organizations learn and the value of systems dynamics in revealing the complexities of business systems. John Morecroft in his text on Strategic Modeling (see references) refers to Senge's "shift of mind" as a "new way of interpreting the business and social world, and a kind of antidote to silo mentalities and narrow functional perspectives often fostered (inadvertently) by organizations".
How many times have you heard of the risk of organizational "silos" in audits or assessments? Probably more than once. Gaining a working understanding of safety management through systems analysis is one of the benefits of the approach we are fostering here at nuclearsafetysim.com.
